I was always home
Through summer
winter and squall
I strolled with you
Stamping on
shed autumn leaves
Sat with you
Watching TV news
When war waged
Ate with you
The finest turkey
And when night
came down
I slept with you
Running fingers through
Your curls
And yet you awaited,
A homecoming
Mumma, Papa
You shrieked
In cold sweat
Silencing midnight deserts
crickets call
And I comforted you
Oh war orphan child
I comforted you
To the sounds of
A broken stringed mandolin
And stories of elaborate
Thanksgiving and Sukkot
When homecomings happen
And feast is laid
From New York to Lebanon
And Gaza, gets grilled
to make shepherd’s pie
