The answer is dreams. Dreaming on and on.
On an unbearable summer day in 2024, the idea arrived. Not with the hesitance of a drizzle but with the force of a downpour, like an antidote to the killing Calcutta heat that reigns the city all summer. It began as a seed of thought—a magazine dedicated to exploring the intricate labyrinth of human experience. And who better to share this journey with than the one person I knew would embrace it with unbridled enthusiasm, Dr. Sabarna Roy?
Our camaraderie is one of contrasts, bound by a shared reverence for the arts. I am a young woman of twenty-four, freshly armed with a degree in English Literature and a worldview shaped by stories, cinema, and the bittersweet symphony of daily life. He, an accomplished engineer with a soul steeped in poetry and prose, is an unlikely yet perfect collaborator. Together, we navigate a space where age and expertise blur, and our conversations—ranging from the literary to the mundane—take root in a shared dream of creating something that resonates deeply.
And so, Mahanagar was born.
The name itself emerged organically, during one of our Google Meet brainstorming sessions. “It has to encapsulate the universality of human experience,” Mr. Roy said, “but also the soul of where we come from. Our roots. Our city. Our Mahanagar.” It was a tribute, both to the bustling, throbbing heart of Calcutta and to Satyajit Ray’s iconic 1963 film. Ray’s Mahanagar captured a city on the brink of transformation, its middle-class inhabitants grappling with the delicate balance of tradition and modernity, hope and disillusionment. Our magazine, we decided, would aspire to do the same—tell stories of lives caught in flux, lives rich with memory, tethered to their roots but yearning to grow.
Over plates of Calcutta’s irresistible delicacies—phuchka that burst with tangy secrets, kosha mangsho tender enough to melt with a look—we sketched our vision. Food, after all, is memory in its most immediate form, and memory is the thread binding our endeavor. Each bite carried us further into the heart of what Mahanagar could be: a space where dreams and memories converge, where voices echo across borders and generations, where every story is personal yet universal.
But why memories? Why base an entire endeavor on something so intangible, so fleeting? It is because, as I look back now, I realize memories are the essence of who we are. They are the stories we carry, the weight and lightness of being. They are what linger when everything else fades.
And so, we begin this journey. Not merely a publication but a testament to human resilience and creativity. A vessel to gather voices, to celebrate the beauty and frailty of existence. Through its pages, Mahanagar will seek to capture not just the changing cityscapes but also the inner transformations of its inhabitants—their triumphs, their struggles, their quiet, everyday revolutions.
We know the world moves ceaselessly forward, towards something and away from something else. Change is the only constant, and yet, within that flux, there are anchors—art, memory, and shared stories that remind us of what it means to be human. Mahanagar hopes to be one of those anchors.
To our readers and writers, we offer this: the space to dream, to share, to roar. In an age of noise, let us find the courage to listen. In an age of fleeting trends, let us dare to create something enduring.
If we fail, we fail. But in failing, we will have lived—fully, fiercely, and with purpose.
And what else, after all, can one ask for?
Meet the passionate dreamers, writers, and creators who bring our vision to life. Together, we craft stories that resonate across time and place.
